# Introduction to Connectors

### Overview

Connectors link nuwacom to the tools an organization already uses, making external data and actions available directly within Chat, Agents, Knowledge, Workflows, and Apps without switching between applications. They cover both Connectors and MCP servers, enabling anything from simple integrations to custom workflows that access relevant data and perform actions in connected systems.

nuwacom offers two types of Connectors, Connectors and MCP Servers. Both are managed by admins under *Workspace settings > Connectors*.

### Connectors

[Connectors](/en/connector-directory) are preconfigured integrations for common business tools. They cover typical use cases and are set up quickly without additional configuration. Once an App is connected, agents use it to retrieve information, analyze content, and perform actions in the connected tool.

Available Connectors include Slack, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Outlook, Gmail, Google Docs and more.

### MCP Servers

[MCP servers](/en/mcp-directory) enable deeper and more flexible integrations beyond standard Connectors. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol and provides a standardized way to connect external systems, so agents not only access data but also execute more complex and granular actions across systems.

MCP servers suit advanced use cases, custom integrations, and technical workflows, and are used primarily by administrators and advanced teams. A connection is created from a catalog of common MCP servers, or a custom server is added manually when needed.

Available MCP servers include GitHub, Atlassian, Notion, Linear, Canva and more.

## Key Benefits

* Checking a Google Calendar for availability and scheduling a meeting
* Looking up a contact in a CRM to draft a follow-up email
* Searching a Jira backlog or creating a new issue
* Pulling a Confluence page into a conversation as reference
* Sending a Slack or Microsoft Teams message to a team
* Retrieving, analyzing, and saving files in Google Drive, OneDrive, or SharePoint

nuwacom uses these Connectors to retrieve information, analyze content, and execute actions in connected tools, such as reading emails, fetching files, or managing calendar events.

## When to Use Connectors

Connectors are the right choice when nuwacom needs to interact with tools a team already relies on. They retrieve data, search company sources, trigger actions, and connect agents and workflows to external systems. For most everyday tools, an App provides a fast, preconfigured path. For tools that require deeper access, custom logic, or self-hosted systems, an MCP server offers the necessary flexibility.

## Connector Governance

Connectors are managed by admins under *Workspace settings > Connectors*. Admins can enable or disable each Connector individually, connect accounts, and control whether access remains private, is limited to selected team members, or is shared with the entire workspace.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="What are Connectors and what are they used for?">
    Connectors bring data from connected business tools directly into nuwacom, so files and information from tools like Google Drive or SharePoint become available as a knowledge source in chats. They also let agents run actions in those systems, from sending emails automatically to managing project documents.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What happens to data when business tools are connected to nuwacom?">
    Connected tools follow the same strict data protection standards as all nuwacom services: no permanent storage, encryption in transit (TLS 1.2/1.3) and at rest (AES-256), full GDPR compliance, and hosting exclusively in ISO/IEC 27001- and SOC 2-certified data centers in Germany.

    Access remains private or is shared with team members or the whole workspace. Sharing a Connector grants recipients access to all available data of the connected account.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What happens to emails when an email account is connected?">
    Agents access emails only on explicit instruction, for example, "search for emails from X" or "send an email to …". Email content is processed temporarily rather than stored permanently.

    All communication runs over encrypted connections (TLS 1.2/1.3), access is governed by role-based access control (RBAC) with full audit logging, and the connection can be revoked at any time via secure OAuth.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Is data from connected tools used for AI training?">
    No. nuwacom does not use company data to train AI models and, as a GDPR-compliant data processor, processes data only according to the provided instructions and contractual agreements.

    Customer data is strictly separated by purpose, and all subprocessors, including AI providers, are bound by equivalent security standards and written contracts.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can the available Connectors in a workspace be controlled?">
    Yes. Administrators define which Connectors a team can use in workspace settings under *Connectors* via *Manage Connectors*, where each Connector can be enabled or disabled as needed.

    This keeps the workspace secure and compliant while maintaining control over external tool integrations.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How is a Connector shared securely with a team?">
    Sharing starts in workspace settings under *Connectors*. Select the *lock icon* next to the Connector in the *Connected Accounts* list, choose the relevant team members or the entire workspace, and confirm with *Done*.

    The principle of least privilege applies: access should remain limited to people who need it, shared access should be reviewed regularly, and highly sensitive accounts such as executive email accounts should remain private.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="How is a Connector disconnected or access revoked?">
    A connection can be removed in workspace settings under *Connectors* by selecting the relevant Connector in the *Connected Accounts* list.

    nuwacom's OAuth permission can also be revoked directly in the connected service's settings, for example in Google or Microsoft.

    At contract end, all customer data is securely returned or deleted, with all copies and backups destroyed within 90 days.
