# Introduction to Design systems

## Overview

Design systems bring a brand’s colors, typography, logos, graphics and design guidance together in one reusable resource. nuwacom applies this visual foundation when creating slides, documents, apps and other branded output. A Design system can be selected directly in chat or chosen automatically by the AI. When several Design systems are available and none has been selected, the AI asks which one to use.

## Key benefits

* **Shared visual direction:** Colors, typography, logos, and design guidance give new content a shared visual direction across supported outputs.
* **Less repetition:** An available Design system can be applied in chat without describing the brand in every request.
* **Room to refine:** Additional brand materials and edits can extend the Design system as requirements change.
* **Distinct brand identities:** Separate Design systems keep different brands or design directions from being combined.

## When to use Design Systems

Design systems are useful when nuwacom regularly creates content for the same brand. They also help workspaces that produce content for multiple brands or use more than one visual direction.

## Use cases

Design systems can guide presentations, documents and Apps. For example, a presentation can use the brand’s colors and typography, while a document can also draw on its logos and design guidance.

## How it works

A design system can be built from three inputs: existing brand materials, such as a style guide or presentation, a website that the AI crawls, or a brand description in chat. The AI uses this input to create a design system that can be reviewed and edited. A design system can also be built manually by adding assets directly in the panel on the right.

* **Colors and typography:** The brand palette, fonts and text styles are defined in chat or added directly. Font files can be uploaded separately.
* **Logos and graphics:** Individual brand assets can be uploaded or extracted from the provided materials, where available in supported formats.
* **Design guidelines:** The usage of these elements is described and refined in chat or edited directly.
* **Multiple design systems:** Different brands or design directions can be managed, and each system can be enabled or disabled individually.

## FAQ

**What content can a Design System be applied to?**

Design systems can guide slides, documents, PDFs, PowerPoint and Word files, images and Apps. They guide the appearance of generated content but do not guarantee an exact copy of an existing layout.

**Can a Design System be created without brand files or a website?**

Yes. A description in chat provides the starting point. The builder asks for basic brand details and builds the Design system from the answers. Its elements can then be refined on the page or in chat.

**Why is a brand font not appearing in generated content?**

A font name does not always provide the font file needed to render it. nuwacom can retrieve files from Google Fonts and Fontshare automatically; other font files must be uploaded. A standard font is used until the required file is available.

**Can two Design Systems be applied at the same time?**

No. nuwacom does not mix two Design systems. When several are available and none has been selected, nuwacom asks which one to use.

**What is recommended if a Brand Skill is already in use?**<br />Create and test a Design system. If it meets expectations, deactivate the Brand Skill. Keep using the Skill if it better supports specific expectations or formats.
